WAIWAKAIHO BULL FAIR.
DEMAND FOR SHORTHORNS. That the Taranaki farmer recognises the advantn.ee to be derived from placing recognised sires at the head of his dairy herd was evidenced by the large attendance at Newton King's annual bull fair, which took place at Waiwakaiho yesterday. Farmers were present from all parts of Taranaki, and competition, particularly for Shorthorns and Holsteins, was very keen. There was a large catalogue, some 180 pedigree and grade bulls parading before the auctioneer; but Mr, C. Fairbrotifer was in good form, and the whole yarding was put through before 4 o'clock. The animals offered found purchasers from all parts of Taranaki.
Tfolsteins were in pood demand, and lovers of the black and white liad some fina ; animals to ehoose from. Two of Mr'; W. D. Linn's aged pedigree bulls, Parthena Sir De Kol Fayne and Parthena Aleartra Pietje realised 50 and Gl guineas respectively. Yearling pedigree Holsteins on account of Mr. A. H. Street sold from 27gns. up to SSgns., the same owner's two-year-olds realising (tagns. Holsteins on account of other vendors ranged from l.igns. to 20gns. Yearling grade Holsteins ranged from llgns. to logns., others from 20gns. to 2ogns. Shorthorns were in great demand, bidding being very keen, and it is evident that Taranaki farmers are realising the. value of this breed. Turnbull and Sons, rhe well-known Sentry Hill breeders, had a fine line of yearlings and two-year-olds of their straiiuthat has been prominent in the show ring. Yearlings realised up to f>Ogns., whilst their two-year-olds ranged from 30gns. to 60gns. Some three-year-olds- sold on behalf of D. J. Greenway ranged from 20gns. to 35gns. Some nice grades submitted on behalf of XV. .7. Topless realised from lOgns. to logns. for yearlings and 28gns. for two-year-olds. Bulls sold on behalf of other vendors ranged from 13gns. to Jerseys were not .in such keen demand, though possibly the fact that the majority of those submitted were not looking their best may have accounted for this to some extent. Practically all, however, topped owners' reserves. Yearlings realised from lOgns., to 2Hgns. whilst bulls of other ages realised up to "ogns. Grades sold well at from lOgns, to 15gns.
