ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham. Oct. 3. The welcome social tendered by the local Hibernians to Riflemen W. Cave, V. Thompson and D. Manner, on Monday evening, attracted a large attendance of friends to the Oddfellows' Hall. Through an unfortunate oversight invitations to other recently-returned soldiers were mislaid. Welcome-home addresses were made bv the Rev. Father Arkwright and Mr. Kilbride, the latter also delivering addresses of welcome to each soldier. (Private V. Thompson was unable to be present, having to go to Rotorua for treatment, and the wish was expressed that he and Mannex (wounded last June at Messines) would soon be restored to their usual good health.

The Eltham County Patriotic Committee has accomplished much good work during its existence. Still, whilst the public have generously responded to the various patriotic calls, very little interest, apart from subscribing, is taken by the public. Less than 30 were present at the annual meeting on Monday evening, and it was generally a case of reelecting the same gentlemen, and thus it follows that Messrs T. B. Crump (Mayor), L. B. Grimstone (treasurer) and D. Syme (secretary) are still in harness, after over two years' work The general committee also includes the majority of members of last year's body.
