STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left With Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] Stratford, Oct. 3. The Methodists of Douglas are holding a ehurcli meeting to-night The Rev. W. Sinclair, of New Plymouth-, is expected to preside. During the evening a roll of honor of the Douglas men who have enlisted will be placed in the church. Nine names are inscribed, and include Riflemen F. St. Oeorae and M. Rea, who have "gone west." The former also had the h'onor of winning the D.C.M". The roll of honor will form an interesting memento of the present war to the adherents of th° church in the years to come. A sitting of the S.M. Court will he held here on Friday. The technical school inspector, Mr. Isaac, has been inspecting the local •school. The Stratford Bowling Club intends making Thursday, October 18, the date for opening its greens. To-day I foreeathered with a farmer who appeared to be in no hurrv to get home the reason being that he had sold out so as to be in readiness for fallins in when the first batch of the Second Division is called up. When told that the Government did not reauire him till next February it did not disturb him in the least, as he counts on having a spell from farm work before taking on camp training. A visit to the premises of Mr. C. E. ames' jewellerv warehouse is« an eyeopener to"the larce and varied stock he is carrying. A glance at the choice selection convinces one that there one can find all classes of woods suitable for farewell gifts, wedding presents, etc. There is jewellery fit to ?race any finger, encircle any arm. or enhance any dress. Toys are also in abundance, and a young mother can always find something there to interest and delight the most troublesome teething child.—Advt.
