WAITARA.

From Our Own Correspondent Waitara, Oct. 3. The weekly bulletin of the result of the baby contest as shown at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday night, was as follows: Freezers' baby 50,400; business baby 40,920; north country 27,300; west country 3600; total 128,280. This represents £534 10s in cash. The business baby committee is holding a calico and poster dance on Thursday next. The freezers' baby committee intends holding another butchers' day on October 13. What will prove rather a novelty in the way of a market day is one being arranged bv the business committee. It intends following the lead of Napier, and having a Maori market day. The project is being well taken up by several of the leading Maoris, and, no doubt, will prove interesting.

It is understood that a number of competitions are to be held in connection with the skating carnival next week. Competitors from New Plymouth and Inglewood are expected. Another parcels day is in store for the public of Waitara the freezers having decided to hold this on October 20. A bundle of votes were received from Urenui yesterday afternoon but sa the closing time had gone they are not included in this week's results.

The want of interest being displayed by so many business people in regard to the health of the business baby is rather dejecting to the little band of men who are putting so much energy into the contest. The cry of want of time is a poor excuse, as the boys at the front do not take such trifles into consideration. The freezers' committee is well organised, and never wants for assistance, whilst on the business side there are only some four or five men helper?. The ladies are doing a tremendous amount of work on both sides, and were it not for the fact of there being such a very energetic lot on the business committee the babv would have suffered for want of nourishment. It is to be hoped these few lines will have the much-de-sired effect.

The north country baby committee intends having a big day next Thursday, when various stalls will be set up at Urenui and a sale of cattle, etc. held to swell the funds. Given fine weather, a successful day should result. The west country committee is having a children's day on Friday, 12th. Last week's affair was a success, and', no doubt, similar results will follow.
