ESCORTED LiNER TORPEDOED. 550 PERSONS RESCUED. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc, and Reuter. I Received Oct. 1, 7.50 p.m. j ' London, Sept. 00. ■ Renter's Agency learns that a Japanese admiral reports that Japanese, destroyers were escorting a liner and transport when the. liner was torpedoed. The destroyers produced a, smoke screen in order to protect tho liner from further attack, and rescued 550 from the ship, including women and children, in less than an hour.
