DISTRICT NEWS.

LEPPERTOtf. (From Our Special Correspondent). I.opperton is one of those fortunate communities where all pull together in matters of common interest and yesterday's market day to gather votes for 'Baby Crowe, the West Country and V.lf.C A. candidate in tlie Baby Voting Contest, was no exception to the rule. Everybody in the place worked zealously, including the school children, to make tbe day the huge success it was. The special feature of the market was the butcher's shop, which had a splendid array of meats, small goods, and poultry, the work being principally that of Messrs Cloke and Stimpson, assisted by Messrs Openshaw, A. Hoskin. and W. Roberts. Mr. Miles Atkinson rlso rendered valuable assistance in this department by collecting the stock and otherwise assisting the butchers. ! Messrs Openshaw and Hinge kijidly placed the whole of their plant at the disposal of -Messrs Stimpsan and Cloke, the latter of whom canvassed the district for stock.

The sweets stall was presided over by Mrs F. N T . Sampson, Mrs. X. Ileppel, and Miss Wheatlev.

At the produce stall, where was to he seen a wonderful array of everything from a cabbage to a lamp, Mesdames F. H. -Sampson, Blackball. Payne, and Stimpson were hard put at times lt> keep pace with the rush of customers. The fancy goods stall did excellent business under the management of Mesdames Ackland, Little, R. Giddy, and Atkinson, who certainly made theirs a paying proposition. Mrs. I.epper and Miss Stewart gave such excellent value in shilling parcels that after the first few were opened the rest went Qtf like the proverbial hot cakes.

The afternoon tea department, a most popular and constantly crowded resort, was in charge of Mesdames Taylor, Cartwright. Giddy., Brown, Oramandy and Miss W right. Two ladv visitors to the district. Mrs. Percival and Miss Putt also rendered great assistance to the committee.

A delightful feature of the afternoon and evening's entertainment was the music rendered by Mrs. Moverley's orchestra. The committee are under a debt of gratitude to these visitors, and to Mr. \Y. Bransgrove, who so kindly motored the musicians from and to New Plymouth.

From the three outside centre? we had a number of visitors, who all expressed pleasure at the arrangements made for their entertainment, and also gratification at the value Lepperton gave when making their purchases. A ntiniber of competitions were got oft during the day. The following is a list of prize-winners:— Most original and useful article made from a sugar bag.—Mrs. Harvey (1). child's creeper; May Gooeh (2), girl's bonnet.

I'nieed sponge cake.—Miss E. Giddv J, Mrs. D. Sarteu 2, Mrs. F. X. Sampson 3. Rainbow apron competition (a hemming competition for men) caused much merriment, and resulted in Messrs Blackhall 1, Aitcheson 2, being the winners.
