STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) | [All communications, letters, etc., left With Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] WOUNDED SOLDIERS' CONCERT. Stratford, Sept. 28. The electrical stall' of the Borough Council has every reason to be well satisfied with the results achieved at the concert and dance held at the IVwn Hall last evening. The stage and hall had been tastefully arranged, wTiilst the floor had received special preparation. During an interval in the concert the Mayor (Mr McMillan) thanked tbc public for their support. The programme submitted was an excellent one. Chief interest centred round the appearance of Miss Rona Kino, from Wanganui. This lady was down for two numbere, but generously contributed five solos, her singing being greatly appreciated. Miss Fyfe, who generously filled the vacancy caused by Mrs. McLaren's indisposition, scored a great success. Miss I.aing, of Inglewood, is a favorite with Stratford audiences, and was recalled for her solo "Until," whilst with the assistance of five young girls, she secured hearty applause in the patriotic item "Anzac." Mr R. Boyd, of Wanganui, delighted lovers of brass music with his euphonium solos, receiving recalls in both instances. Mrs. J. Tizard also earned ft recall for her item. Mr. Frank Ranford created much merriment whilst he initiated his audience into the mysteries of a small boys' secret society. Mr. T. Gormley, Hawera, was the comedian, and his ditties were thoroughly worthy of the recalls secured. Mr, C. H. Fox had a busy evening acting as accompanist. The hall was crowded for the dance that followed, excellent music being provided by Mrs. P.ianchi (piano) and Mr. S. Parker (cornet). The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr. Peter T. Aitken. Dancing was kept going till an early hour this morning. GENERAL. The weather has improved a bit, and feed is showing more nourishment. The Midhirst Ihiry Factory is now making over 100 boxes daily, and in the flush of the season generally manages to top 180 boxes. With the shrinkage of herds this total is hardly expected this season. Mr. W. Skedgwcll, late chairman ot directors of the Midhirst Dairy Company, has decided to have a spell from milking. and has settled in Stratford. The residents of Tuna intend holding a social in his honor this evening. Now that football is over, the scholars of the Stratford school have decided to form a cricket and tennis club. A committee has been set up, and the boys consider it will not he long before they are knocking the cover off the cricket balls in the school grounds.
