POLITICAL NOTES.
: AN INTERESTING WEEK AHEAD. MEMBERS FEELING HARASSED. From Our (Parliamentary Reporter. Wellington, 16. Proceedings in Parliament this week promise to be of very great interest. The adjourned debate on the .second reading ■of the Expeditionary Forces Bill is to he resumed. The opening of this debate was marked by a very powerful appeal by Mr. Poland (Ohinemuri) on behalf 'of the Second Division men. and other members have some advice to give the Government on this subject. Members have been impressed by the arguments of the Second Division League, and perhaps even more by the reflection that the League represents well over 200,000 votes
. The Cabinet has been considering tho question of pay and pensions during tht. ■week-end. No final decision has yet .been reached, and no announcement is likely to be made to the House before the end of this week or the beginning of •■nxt week. But there is substantial reason for believing that the section of the Cabinet which would place economy before the necessities tfctho vrives and children is not going to have its own way. Your correspondent was, assured on very good authority that the dependents of the Second Division men were going to be placed in a secure position.
The Liquor Bill is also to come forward for discussion this week, the second reading having been set down for Tuesday evening. The final closing hour seems likely to be eight, the. hour named in tho Bill, but the advocates of six o'clock closing claim that they have a chance of amending the Bill in the direction they desire, and they certainly: are going to .make the attempt. The second reading debate may not throw Ver* much light on the subject, 6ince the amendments cannot be moved untiltho Bill reaches committee, and the mender's whose votes are still in doubt, as far as lobby knowledge goes, are not likely to commit themselves earlier is necessary. W*iih the Second DiylsiOlJ-'-Loague on one hand and the temperan.ee advocates on the other, the average member of Parliament is feeling a 'Jittle-,; harassed at the present time. ! j
