Business premises on the lower sides of the street were flooded to a, considerable depth. The low-lying lands are everywhere under water. Heavy Hoods are reported from the Waiau district. There are three washouts on the Cheviot railway line. The rain in North Canterbury was the heaviest experienced for years. At the Mendip Hills six inches of rain fc-ll in twelve hours There has been a great loss in early lambs throughout the district. Roads are seriously damaged in all directions. The roads from Parnassus to Kaikoura are impassable, and the coach service has stopped running.
