HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the New Plymouth High School Hoard was held hint night when there were present: Messrs ]>. Hut-chen (chairman), 10. I'. Webster, P. W. Atkinson, L. U Sladden, T. (.!. Hirst, H J. 8. Pox, JR. \Y. D. Robertson, and S. G. Smith. Dr. Fookes was granted leave of absence. HEXDRIE STREET. The Borough Council forwarded copy of letter received from Mr. E. M. Grayling. slating that Hendrie street was fenced off opposite his property, ami that the grounds of'the new high school buildings were extended on to the street, stopping access to his place from Eliot street. Mr. Grayling stated that he objected to the street beinpr closed. The chairman staled that the grounds •slightly encroached 011 (lie road, but thin could be altered at slight expense, A fence had been placed across the road to prevent stock straying into the school grounds, but panels had been provided, which vould be removed, and in point of fact, anyone entitled to use it could use the road, which was now in a better con'dition than ever, being now available for wheeled traffic. The matter was left in the hands of tlie chairman to reply to the Borough Council. GIRLS' SCHOOL. Miss .T. R. Barr. principal of the Girls' High School, reported that dressmaking elates in connection with home service had been commenced, and she asked permission to purchase two sewing machines. The many attempts made to improve the black boards at the school had proved (juite unavailing, and as it was over a year since they Inn! been pnf in. and it was practically impossible to make use ef many of them, and as blackboard work was essential, she asked that new boards be put in. -On making enquiries, Miss Barr found that no dill'eremv was being made in the holidays in girls' schools, so she proposed to close, the present term 011 August £3 anil reopen 011 September 11. Mr. Trimble stated Hint hyloplafe. which was most suitable for blackboard!;. was improcu'rable at present. | It was resolved to ask the architect ! to report on the i|ue,stion of blackboards. | Miss Rarr was given authority to purchase two sewing machines. TITB NEW BOYS' SCHOOL. Mr. Cumming, the board's architect, forwarded an-amended plan of the new Boys' High School, the estimated' cost of the work to be carried out at present being £BSOO. request that the Department place the proposed grant oi £SOOO to the board's credit. GENERAL. A voucher was received from the Treasury [or £172 4s ;"><(, being .a quarter's revenue on account of secondary education reserves.
