THE POSTAL INQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Aug, 18. At tho postal inquiry, the Rev. Mr. Elliott stated that certain tetters posted to test tho censorship were written: at his dictation, signed with fictitious names. Mi-. J. W. Salmon, K.C., Solicitor, General, gave evidence that at the endof 191(5 and the beginning of '1917 the attention of the authorities was called on more than ono occasion to the activities of tho Committee of Vigilance and of the Rev. Howard Elliott. The first occasion was when a letter was received by tho Attorney-General enclosing ft copy of a circular headed "Home's hideous guilt in European carnage.'.' He received no instructions, but considered j the matter and came to the conclusion, that the pamphlet was a mischievous publication, and that the Protestant Political Association should not be allowed xinrestricted u>se of the Post Office for circulating the pamphlet. He advised that a censorship should be set up oil post box 012. He admitted tho censor, was under the control of the New Zealand Government.
DIPHTHERIA IN WELLINGTON,
Wellington, Aug. 19. Tim Health Inspector informed, the Wellington llospitaTßoard that S3 cases of diphtheria had been notified during the past four weeks, 51 being from the Wellington City area. The special ward at the hospital was so full that at one time they had to place two patients in onu bed.
The Hospital Board distil: -ed the problem of the control of contacts, regardingthis at present to bo too lax, hut it ia so full of difficulties that nothing seemed possible to be dope beyond enforcing, as far as practicable, tlio precautionary regulations already in operation.
