WESTERN ATTACK.
DEADLIEST FIGHTING FOR A RIDGE. SEVEN ENEMY COUNTER ATTACKS SEVERE GERMAN LOSSES. United Service. Received Aug. ,13, 11.5 p.m.
London, Aug. 13. Mr. Reach Thomas reports that Friday's fighting on the ridge east of Westliook was some of the deadliest of the vear. The enemy counter-attacked seven times on a mile frontage, the German losses being an great as they have ever been since the days of the murderous massed attack.

London, Aug. 13. Sir Douglas Haig reports. Wo captured six guns in Friday's attack. The Portuguese repulsed a raid southward of Armentieres. We downed eight aeroplanes, and five of ours are missing. ( A French communique reports that artillerving is violent in Belgium, in the section at Hurtebwe, on both banks of the Meuse. The Germans again cannonaded I'hoims. Our air squadrons were active, and bombed railway stations and other points, fires and explosions following.
FRENCH REGAIN TRENCHES.
REPRISAL BOMBING OP FRANKFURT. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc. and Reuter. Received Aug. 13, 5.5 p.m. A French communique states: Wfi completely recovered the elements of trenches captured by the Germans on August 9 east of Fayet. Two enemy attacks to the south of Ailles were repulsed. We hold all our positions. Wc made renewed progress at night time. As reprisals for tho enemy bombardment in the Nancy region, two French machines bombed Franlcfurt-on-Maino.
A MONTH'S AERIAL WORK. 242 ENEMY AERIAL MACHINES ACCOUNTED FOR. Reuter Service. Received Aug. 13, 11.5 p.m. London, Aug. 13. Headquarters reports that during July our airmen brought down 122 machines and drove down 120 out of control.
WHAT THE GERMANS WISH.
TO MARE PRESENT BATTLE DECISIVE. • KEGARDLESS OF COST. Received Aug. 14, 1.30 a.m London, Aug. 13. Mr. Philip Gibbs says the enemy apparently wishes to make this the decisis battle of the war. He (the correspondent) cannot see how the enemy hopes to decide it in his own favor after the loss of Pilken and Westhock ridge, but he is out to kill, regardless of his own losses. A MINE CRATER TAKEN, Ixindon, Aug. 12. Sir Douglas Haig reports: The weather is wot. There was strong fighting for the possession of a mine crater eastward of Givenchy and La Bassee. We established ourselves in the crater. Enemy artillery is active east and north of V'prca.
