DISTRICT NEWS.

mm. (From Our Own Correspondent). On Friday, August 3, a social was held in the Koru Hall in aid of the school funds, a very enjoyable time being spent. .Most of the items were by the children, and although the small fry on several occasions got Istage frig-lit when the curtain went up, they performed, on the whole, very uicely, nearly every item being recalled. Mr. Tichbon commenced with '-Queen of the Earth," which was well received; Melva and Cyril Hinkley (four and six years) then contributed "Just a Wee Tiny Shilling," followed by an action song, ".My Dolly," by 10 little girils; pianoforte solo, Willie lirutz; song. "Wo Won't Forget Our Boys," Ethel Morris; action song, "Crown's Donkey," by girls and boys; duct, Miss Raill and Mr. Pearson; * song, "Bessie Bloom, the Flower Girl," Joyce Barber; recitation, "Dora's Danger," by 12 girls und boys; comic song, Mr. Cheshire; songs, Cyril Hinkley, "Keep the Home Fires Burning."" and ''Waiit till the Clouds Roll By"; pianoforte solo, Vera Morris; i song, Mona 'Hartley; song, "Come to Supper," boys and girls. After supper Mr. Tichbon gave a Maori Ipika very cleverly causing much fun among the children. Mr. Cheshire was chairman and M.C. Mr. Pearson supplied the music for the dance and played tile accompaniments. Our school committee has lately had two working bees at the school, topping pine trees and cleaning windows, thereby much improving the lighting of the school.

Mr. Scott, of New Plymouth, has lately taken over Mr. Area's farm, and already got vigorously to work. Wo believe that me are shortly to loose Mr. and Mrs. Curtz and family from Mr. McCawley's farm, and possibly Mr. Tichbon, as he i 3 reported to have sold his farm.

The earthquake shock was felt hero about 3.30 on Monday morning, but at that hour did not trouble the settlers much.
