Stratford, Aug. 10. The concert organised by tho Young Women's Bible Class, held in the Methodist schoolroom last night, proved a great success, the attendance being largo and tho musical items excellent. Proceedings opcncfd with the National Anthem, after which solnj were contributed by Mrs. Bennett pWidhirsl), Tom Hanford, P. Aitkin, and F. Hale, and recitations by Mrs. Bridceinan and Miss Howe, whilst Mr. Meuli contributed a violin bolo. and Misses and Mr. Rogers an instrumental trio. Encores were demanded and responded to. the musical monologue by Mr. Frank Ran ford being particularly pleasiii!.;. A competition was held during the evening, and was won by Miss Dorothy Catton. The proceeds Were in aid of the Y.M.C.A. at the front and the Foreign Mission movement.
Particulars are advertised of tho grand patriotic efforts being made by the Turanaki Provincial 'Scottish Society on Friday evening and Saturday of next week. On Friday a concert and dance will be held in the Town' Hall, at which performers from Wanganui, New Plymouth, and Rangitikei will be assisted by leading local talent. It is hoped to make it a special Scottish Saturday, when the lads and lassies will parade aud dance in Broadway. The charge for admission to the concert and dance should bo within the reach of all. Considerable interest was taken in the alleged ■perjury case heard this morning. The sitting was very bircf, ten witnesses being heard in about 90 minutes. This rapidity of court 'business was mainly secured by the decision of Mr. Johnstone, defending counsel, to refrain from putting questions to witnesses.
The splendid warm weather now being experienced is much appreciated by farmers. Cattle are now looking in remarkably good condition. At the Lorn-garth dairy factory meeting. Messrs J. Fearon, R. Burke, and J. Phillips were elected to fill three vacancies on tho directorate, and Mr. J. 11. Thomas was re-elected auditor.
The long winter evenings are still on hand. To those who find time hangs heavy a visit to Mr. C. E. James' warehouse will soon provide a remedy, as 'he has in stock all classes of parlor games for young and old. Besides amusements, the warehouse has a large range of Doulton ware, whilst the range of jewellery should satisfy all tastes. Peters, of Stratford, in announcing the success attending his sale efforts, which is nchv in full swing, lays stress on the class-value of the bargains now offering, and whether it bo to-day. to-morrow or the next, day, you are sure to have the choico of quality goods, nothing else. The romantic side of life must not be lost sight of, as romance has a direct bearing on our ■stability*. Young men are requested to fall in love and then into Ben. J. Peters' sale for a good engagement ring. A nice choice in presents awaits reciprocating young ladies.*
