ECONOMY AND NATIONAL EFFICIENCY.

To the Editor. Sir, —Tlio New IPlymoutli .Borough's expenditure on administration, at a time of national stress, can surely be curtailed and the post of inspector of nuisances, vacated hv the resignation of Ben Tippens, be dispensed with, and the £ ISO per annum saved until the war is won and the Kaiser (banished. Our national industries are languishing for want of labor, and no doulbt an alble bodied man will be selected for the post, and other things made to suffer in consequence. Our footpaths are a disgrace, and ini'mbers &f the roads to our homes are vet unformed and unroetallcd. The money thus saved could be invested in labor for this purpose. Tailing this a woman should 'be appointed to the post and our city fathers and leading public spirited citizens invited to co operate with her and the police force to sec our laws are complied with. T presume our sanitary inspector to be too hard worked .1 nifin to he entrusted with the dual offices. We have tbeen involved in an additional expenditure quite recently in the matter of a ncivv valuation roll which might have been saved had we adopted the Government valuation on unimproved values, as the more advanced cities irvi towns have done. This cost would have gone a long way to assist in putting our main footpaths in walkaMe condition tlih matter of the extra .€IBO a year should he reviewed liy the recently appointed KlUeiencv Board at the earliest possible date and tliey be asked to report whether the appointment of an inspector of nuisances to the New Plymouth Borough Council at a salary of £IBO per annum is in the interest of national efficiency. Perscna'lv, I think not.—T am, etc., FRO BONO PUBLICO.
