THE BABY COMPETITION.
To the Editor. Sir, I understand the slides sholwing the baby competitors in the albore competition are to >be shown in one theatre in town only, commencing this week. Phis competition, one reads, is a patriotic efiort, designed, one must presume, to raise as much money as possible for a worthy object. Will the promoters therefore please explain why 'the offer of the Taranaki Amusements C-o.'s manager to show the slides nightly,in his two theatres for a fortnight and to donate to the fund one penny from every ticket of admittance sold during that period lias not 'been accepted 1 ft is currently alleged that the management of tjie theatre where the slides are to lie shown is offering one farthing per ticket to the fund; at least, that was the original arrangement. I read of the Taranaki Amusement t'o.'s off?r in your paper last Friday Iweek, and on inquiring from the manager on Saturday what arrangements had been made, was surprised to learn that he had not even received an acknowledgment of his letter from the secretary of the competition, although he had been informed that his offer -was to be considered last Tuesday. We are not an illiberal pulblic where patriotic appeals are concerned, but I can assure you that very many of us will keep our benevolence in cheek where it can be seen that motives other than patriotism are so clearly in evidence. It may not yet be too late for the promoters of this competition in patriotism's name to put themselves square with the public.—l am, etc., NOT SATISFIED.
