THE SHIPPING MERGER.

(From Our.Own Correspondent). Wellington, June 18.

| A committee of Cabinet convened by the Hon. G. W. Russell met to-day to consider information that has been gathered concerning the shipping merger and its' effect upon New Zealand trade interests. The meeting was informal, and some of the report's that were before the Ministers were incomplete. Another meeting may be held before Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph WafU reach Wellington, but the Ministers realise, it is understood, that they cannot proceed far in the matter during the absence of the party leaders. A section of the Cabinet undoubtedly is strongly of opinion that the Government should not allow tho control of the Union Company, which is regarded as an important New Zealand institution, to pass into the hands of the big shipping combine.
