Lieut. A. Smith is on a short holiday visit to New Plymouth. A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Sir Matthew 'Harris, formerly Lord Mayor of Sydney. A London cablegram states that Mr. Bonar Law's second son has died of wounds in Palestine.

Lieut. Gordon Mcintosh, of Tongaporutu, has been exempted from active military service by the Medical Board. Captain Allen has been notified that his son, A. S. Redmond, Nationalist M.P. for East Tyrone, has been killed in action. Mr. Redmond's death is deplored by all Irish ranks. He was gallantly leading his men at Messines when ,hit. He was carried off in an Ulster ambulance.

One of the of Wanganui's fast disappearing old identities passed away on Thursday evening in the person of Mr. James Gray, at the advanced age of 85 years. The deoeased was for the past forty years connected with river navigation, particularly in regard to Hatrick and Oo.'s river fleet.

Miss Clifford, of Lepperton, is in receipt of an offer of three years' free tuition at the Royal College of Music in London. She has been well and favorably known in the whole of the district by her character sketches and impersonations, but such nn offer sets the seal of true musicianship on her work as a pianlste, and is the augury of a brilliant and successful future. She secured the gold medal for the whole of New Zealand in her section at the. examination held last October, the examiner's remarks being of the most flattering description. It is to be hoped sho may be able to avail herself of such a magnificent opportunity, soi often wished for and so seldom achieved. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford are also to be congratulated on her success, as is Mr. Renaud, her teacher, who prepared her for the examination, as it is a subject for just and proper pride.
