A MAORI TRAGEDY.
WIFE MURDER 1£» WITH AN AXE.

A tragedy took place to-night in Fox street, when a Maori, Abraham To Whoro, murdered his wife, Charlotte, by striking her on the head with an axe. The murderer made his escape, and so far has not been apprehended. The couple had been quarrelling, to Uio neighbors' knowledge, for some (lays. The tragedy was witnessed by a little daughter, Miriam, aged eleven, who slates that during a quarrel in the kitchen lior father rushed outside and returned with an axe, with which ho struck her mother, who died on the way to the hospital. Te Whero at once departed, and when tho neighbors arrived a few minutes later there was no sign of him. The police aro conducting an active search all over the district.
Te Whero is a laborer, about 45 years of age. Mrs. Te Whero was previously married, and leaves two grown-up daughters by tho. first marriage, and two daughters and two sons, all under eleven, by the second marriage.
