THE SUBMARINE CAMPAIGN.
DOOMED TO FAILURE. RUMORED ABANDONMENT OF CAMPAIGN. ALLIES' MEASURES TOO DRASTIC. Received May 31, 8.30 p.m. Rome, May 30. Advices from Berne state that it is rumored in Germany that- the submarine campaign will not be continued beyond the summer, as the heavy losses under the Entente's new measures have caused great discouragement. The Germans are beginning to realise that their high hopes of the campaign are doomed to failure. \ A BETTER SHOWING. ONLY ID VESSELS StJ'NK. Received May 31, 11.50 p.m. London, May 31. The British report on the submarine campaign during the past week gives the following figures:— This 'Last week. Week. Arrivals 2710 2654 Departures 2788 2759 Sunk over 1400 tons 18 IS Sunk uhder 1600 tons 1' 9 Unsuccessfully attacked -i 17 A Fishing vessels sunk 2 3 SAFE CONDUCT FOR SWEDISH AN[D 'DANISH SHIP 6. Received May 31, 7.30 p.m. Stockholm', May 30. It is believed that Swedish and Danish ships will be permitted to leave British harbors on July 1 under German safe Conduct.
