HOTEL THIEF ARRESTED.

Whakatane, May 20,

On May. 15 the Commercial Hotel was broken into through a window, and the sum of £2 9s was stolen from the , till. \s the result of a smart piec of work Constable Cummings arrested a man named Howe two days later, at a place about eight miles away. The constable found an exemption Vdge near the till, and there was blood on the window pane. The man claimed the badge, but denied being guilty of the theft, although corresponding coins, sixpences and shillings, were found on him. Accused had a cut thumb and his clothes wero blood-stain-ed. He. said that his injuries were due to barbed wire. Yesterday he pleaded 'guilty to breaking and entering and, theft, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. He also pleaded guilty to attempting to break into and enter the Whakatane Hotel.
