SHORTAGE OF DOCTORS.
THIRD-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS TO BE RETAILED. It is understood (says a Dunedip correspondent) that in consequence of the shortage of medical practitioners in New Zealand and the difficulty of maintaining an adequate supply of junior house surgeons in tho hospitals, tho Government has decided that tlnrd year'medical students must bo retained in the Dominion, and that instructions to that effect have been Issued to the military service boards. A number of the students who are affected by this decision have either enlisted or been called dip by ballot. Ih some cases applications by the Dean of the Medical Faculty for the exemption of the balloted men amongst them have been dismissed, temporary exemption only being granted to enable the students to sib for their first profesional examination, which was held last week. Application will now be made to the military service boards for the reconsideration of the cases in whiisji this temporary exemption only was granted.
