SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS MADE.. Received May 18, 7.30 p.m. Rome, May 17. Italian Official; There was bitter fighting between Cucco and Vodice. The enemy's repeated massed attacks wore repulsed. We retain the bastion at Mont Cucco, from Height 610 to Height 524. Wo progressed towards an important summit, Height 652, on the Vodice. Enemy counter-attacks eastward of Gorizia were broken. We occupied an important height southward of Grazigna, and repulsed a serious and powerful attack in the northern sector of the Carso. We took prisoners in three days 4031. HEIGHTS AROUND GORIZIA CARRIED. Received May 18, 0.45 p.m. Rome, May 17. An Italian infantry rush, supported by a heavy barrage, carried all the heights around Gorizia. The Austriana, in the last moments, concentrated a 'heavy fire on Gorizia, where there was enormous damage.
