IMPORTANT PROGRESS. MANY PRISONERS TAKEN. Rome, May 17. The Italians made further important progress on the third day of the battle. Many prisoners were taken. The Austrians are using new and better g'.ins, and many troops have arrived iroui the Russian front. ti.-.A MISLED. AUSTRIAN POSITION SMASHED. London, May 17. The preliminary Italian bombardment between Tolmino and the sea lasted n.l hours. The enemy apparently expec'm the main attack on the Carso and Goviaia, where they massed 1500 gimp, but the principal attack was on the Plava sector, where the Isonzo runs between steep hills. The enemy held the entire left bank, except the Plava bridgohead, where the Italians established themselves early in the' war, though thsy have been triable to enlarge the bridgehead since. The Italian guns and trench mortßrs smashed the Austrian position and cn Sunday the Italians bridged the Isonzo below Plava and on Monday crossed without interruption, though shells filled the valley.
