PUKEKURA PARK TRUSTEES

MONTHLY MEETIXG. The monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Pukekura Park was held on Tuesday night, when the following were present:—Messrs R. C. Hughes (chairman), Harris Ford, W. L. Newman,, J. W. Hayden, W. A. Collis, and E. H. Tribe (hon. secretary). The chairman welcomed the Borough Council representatives, Messrs Collis and Hayden. The secretary reported that there wa» a credit balance of £52, inclusive of Mrs Hullce's legacy of £IOO, tp that practically there was an overdraft of £SO. The Borough Council account for the installation of electric light in the park ( £3-2) was passed for payment, it being stated that a contribution of £lO from the Citizens' Band had 'been received.

A discussion took place regarding the tea kiosk, which members considered waß in too damp a place, Mr Ford expressing the opinion that the proper site for building was on the spur behind the bathing shed, and it should have been put there originally. Mr Tribe remarked that the cobl of a new kiosk would be between £4OO and £SOO The board had no money in hand for that purpose at present, and until the necessary funds were subscribed they would have to continue as at present. Plans for concrete steps in place of tho present wooden boat-landing in front of the rotunda were presented by Mr F. Messenger. The estimated coot of the steps was £25. The chairman said they would be constructed on the cantilever principle. Mr Ford doubted whether a firm enough foundation could be obtained. He explained that when the rotunda was erected a considerable part of the hill was cut back and the area in front was composed of the spoil. After discussion, the board authorised Mr Messenger to construct the step.% at the same time as the hot water service is installed, providing that after consulting with the borough engineer he is Wtisfled that the ground is suitable. 1 The matter of the footpaths In th« park was referred to, and ii was decided to order six yards of "screenings" to be placed on the paths npar the rotunda. The chairman said that in winter soma of the paths were practically under watc!*, and if they could be graded It would probably be a great improvement. After some discussion, it was decided to obtain tho opinion of the borough engineer. /

MrCollis, referring to a complaint re. eently published in the press that th« beautiful view of Mount Egmojit o«<# obtainable from the park wa» now blocked by a growth of trees, said It WM a thing that he, himself, had repeatedly pointed out during the last three yuan, The chief obstruction to the view wa» 4 row of pinus insignia tree* on Brooklands road, which were originally placed there for shelter purposes, but now that the plantation was quito sturdy thoy were neither use nor ornament. It would be a god-send to the board if residents in the locality would, cut the tree* down on the understanding that thoy could take them for firewood. It was decided that members of tlta board should meet at the park to dccidq what trees should be cut down,
