LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
GOVERNMENT SHOULD ACQUIRE GOOD LAND. . SCHEME SUBMITTED TO REMEF ASSOCIATION. At the last meeting of the Stratford branch of the Taranaki War Relief Association a lengthy letter was read fro':i Mr. W. D. Powdroll, of. Hawcra, which it is intended to place before the j-.ifi-eicney Board. The writer outlined a scheme for the Government to parcha™ first class land for dairying purposes, >ipon which to place returned, soldiers. Mr. Powdroll gave very minute details of his scheme, based upon personal experience, which met with the hearty cppvoval of those present at the meeting. Mr. McPhillip said niafc the association could not force the hands of the Government in the matter, but there was no doubt that the very best of land should be purchased. The position was that no first class land had been offered to tli* Government. The probability was that a number of returned Taranaki men would leave this district in search of better land offering. If no fust class land in Taranaki was offered to ttie Government, he would favor it being taKen compulsorily. In his experience he had never seen a dairy farmer make a failure when placed on first class land, but he knew of hundreds of instances where men had failed from'dairying on infertot land. Mr. Crump moved and Mr. McPhillip leeonded that the association approv.-. of the principle of the Government acquiring first class land, This was carried unanimously.—Argus.
