FORGER SENTENCED.
MEAN AND CONTEMPTIBLE! OFFENCES. Dunedin, April lg. Thomas James Campbell, who, in the Lower Court, pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery, came up for sentence by Mr. Justice Sim. Counsel said that accused had served in the Boer War, <>nd at. the outbreak of the present war had twice enlisted, but had been rejectid on account of lung trouble. He was finally accepted as assistant butcher on a transport, where he contracted cerebrospinal meningitis. The present of'ences were committed while accused was under the influence of drink. Prosecuting counsel said that the police described the accused as a plausible cri■ninal. He was waiting to be tried on charges of false pretences at Christchurch, Timaru,. and Napier. The judge said the offences were mean and contemptible, and sentenced accused to 12 months' imprisonment on each charge, i]\e sentences to be cumulative.
