BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee met last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Crs. J. S. S. Medley, F. 13. Wilson, A. H. Johnston*, W. A. Collts, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, S. J. Smith, J. T. Mannix, and A. E. Watkins. In reply to a letter received from the Council re the Oil Well Company's water supply agreement, Mr. Millar (secretary) stated that water used at the works during the last six months was approximately 900 gallons per day, and there was little, likelihood of the company being in fi posrtion to take full advantage of the contract until the field is further developed. Under these circumstances and in view of the necessity of practising rigid economy, his 1 board would greatly appreciate a modified agreement for the remainder of the term. The Council's old agreement was for five years from May 9, 1013, at £aj per half year, with a maximum supply of 2,">,000 gallons per day of 24 hours, all above that quantity to be Gd per thousand gallons The Council agreed to fix the .charge at Is per 1000 gallons. An estimate, amounting to £ll9 17s sd, was received on the 15th inst., from the borough engineer, re the cost of constructing Fulford street from Dawson street to Morley street. Mr. Cook stated that the matter had apparently been deferred, as he had had no further instructions on the subject.—-The engineer' was authorised to proceed with the work.

The borough engineer wrote stating that the road surface on Mangorei road, from Devon street to Eiinu street, was in very had order. In jn-oparing an estimate he had not allowed for widening the road, which . appears wide enough for the present trallic. The distance was 33 chains, and the estimated cost £207 13s. He also recommended that the path between the municipal reserve and lot pt. H be kerbed and cnannellod, at a cost of £.33, and that the path be trimmed and gravelled ready for tarring, at a cost of £3j 10s; 'total cost, £3BB 3s. If the road wa9 widened, the sum of £l4O must be added.—The engineer was imtructcd to 1 proceed with the work.

"Buller street is one of the streets that can be classified as a residential street," wrote the engineer, ''and where, owing to lesser amount of traffic, wide path* can be well adopted.'' UJc suggested that the Council make a dry patli 7ft and a grass path 13ft wide each side of the roadway. He did not recommend kerbing and channelling in this class of street, as no scour was likely to take place.—The Council agreed to form a dry path 7ft wide, gravelling and rolling 01 chains, and trimming the watertablo (H chains hi length, and tarring and sanding two coats 04 chains, at a cost of £230 os,

The borough engineer recommended tlie Council to tar, before the cud of the year, Courtenay street, from Liardet street to Gowcr street. The eost for two coats work would be £2O. • He also recommended that a length of five chains from Courtenay street to Leaeh street be tarred with two coats, the estimated eost being £34. He suggested that the whole ot this street from Devon street to the l'ark be put in order and tarred, as this street has several public buildings erected along it. and is the most popular ono for visitors to the park.—The Gov f oil agreed to both proposals.

The engineer stated that the levelling of Cutfieid road was ail but completed, and the plan would be put in hand immediately. Ho proposed to invite tenders for the earthwork and installation, and now asked foi tho necessary authority to proceed.—The'Council granted the authority. The engineer recommended that Lorna street (Venle's Estate; be regraded and the path made good, at an approximate epsf flf Peforred for six months.

In roply to C'p, Smith'* inquiry as to what was being done to Hendriq street, :t was stated that the matter was in the hands of the borough engineer.
