INGLEWOOD.
VANITY FAIR. (From Our Own Correspondent^), The above function, organised and earlied out by the Ladies' Patriotic Committee, was held in the Town Hall or. 1 lmrsday. The weather conditions were ideal, R nd the hall was crowded both afternoon and evening. The stall-hold-era were all attired in costumes fashionable before the wearers knew what fa."h'ons were, and the effect was very pleasing indeed. The ball -was arranged to represent a street scene of ancient times, with stalls on either side. The stage was turned into a supper room, where afternoon tea, etc., was served, whilst the supper room was used for the floral exhibits. During the afternoon and evening the proceedings were enlivened by an orchestra consisting of Mrs 1 Sutherland, Miss Curd, and Messrs Stockman, Lamb and Sutherland (2) In the evening a party from -\ew Plymouth consisting of Misses K. Bennett, Henry. Mour.t and Cocker and Messrs Macdonaid and Stephenson, provided an ■ excellent programme, which was highly appreciated. The entries in the flora! exhibits were in most cases large and good, and the results were as follow:—Decorated table, Mrs. Hobbs 1, Mrs. Bartlett'2 Mrs. Lile .<!; bowl, Mrs. Hobbs 1 Miss Esse 2, Mrs. Gibbs 3; parasol, Mrs. Gibbs 1; hat, Mrs. Gibbs 1; viise, girl* under IG, Alice Heatlev; vase, "iris under 12, Winnie Burgess ], Rose Peterson v.; table, girls, B. Esse 1, Lena Rowo 9 • go-cart, Mrs. Hewlett 1; doll's go-carT L. Larson 1. ''
The competitions resulted as followsSucking p,|, Mrs Bracegirdle; chocolates, Mrs. Bracegirdle; doll, Mr. Oldnnrror, Mrs. Ileal; nightdress, Mrs. Barlow; picture, Mr. G. Fraser; cushion, Grossman; p.ctnre, Mr. Scott; and the ca.;es by Mcsdames Harrison and Robb, and Messrs T. Clark and H. Sander.
The baby show was held in the afternoon, Dr. and Mrs. Nutting actin" as judges, when the following awards were "Under six months, Ashley Pelcli ; between sb: and twelve months, Josephine Baker, Thora Clark and Brvee • iaitin, equal (in the draw the former won); over twelve months, Hilton Spudate 1. . 4
The following had charge of the different stalls:—Fancy work, Mesdames Outfield and J. Sutherland, taking £IS lis KM; jumble stall, Mesdames A. Allen, K. Davis and Jtisscs' Miller and V. Julian, .-CM} (is (id; sweets stall, Mrs. Henry, Misses Marshall, Julian and Henry, £l3 2s Gd; afternoon tea, Mestlamea F. Brown, Evans, Coldwell, Leslie. Misses Humphrey (2), Hamerton and Brake, £1 Ss .'id; marble bar, Mrs. Burnip and Miss Esse, £0 4s 1(1; flower stall, Mesdames Messenger, De Launay and imer; floral decorations, Mrs. Roberts and -Hiss Hamerton, £4 10s 3dMadame Marie, £2 lis 9d; lady with 100 pockets, £2 Ss; door takings, £34 las 2d; total, £l-23 10s Id. The committee are indebted to Mr. Williams, who devoted a lot of time iii preparing the hall and helping generally, also to the New Plymouth concert party and the local gentleman who stood the expense of the ear.
ihe ladies are deserving of congratulations on bringing the fair to such a successful issue, which can be voted the most successful patriotic function held in Inglewood since war broke out
