o PRISONER JUMPS OVERBOARD. By Telegraph—Pros3 Association. Christeliurch, Feb. 17. A man named Christie, a member of the reinforcements, who was being brought to Christeliurch to answer to u police charge created a sensation when the Maori entered the harbor this morning by jumping overboard. An alarm was given, the steamer put back and a .boat was lowered. The man was a strong swimmer but was' overtaken awl caught. He had a lifebelt under his coat. The constable was much concerned at the attempted escape of a handcuffed man. The Maori was delayed for twenty minutes. , EXPLOSION OF SULFURIC ACID. Wellington, Feb. 17. The finding of the commission appointed to inquire into the explosion of sulphuric acid aboard the Monowai on September 7, 1910, is that the accident was due to the inefficiency of a I bung of one drum, which was not fixed ( in the ordinary way with a screw cap and lead washer. The commission recommends that, if the costs of the inquiry bo. collected from Rosen ham & Co., Melbourne, who shipped the acid on the Paloona for New Zealand. EXPORT OE. PELTS. Wellington, Feb. 17. Permits for the export of pelts have been suspended entirely, except in respect of pelts from sheep slaughtered for meat export, slaughterhouses, or from sheepskins already fellmongered.
