STRANDING OF THE MAITAI.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Feb. 17. An inquiry commenced to-day into the stranding of the Maitai at Rarotonga on Chirstmas Eve. Mr. Mays, for the Marine Department,, said that if the evidence showed the captain had acted under the instructions of the owners in endeavoring to pick up two anchors, he might have to ask permission to cite the owners. Charles McLean, captain of the Maitai, stated there was an unusual ocean swell. The night was calm. After failing to recover the anchor he put the Maitai's head to sea. Afterwards the vessel stopped and the starboard anchor was let go. Shortly afterwards the steamer tailed round and the chief officer called out, but the cable had parted. He ordered full steam ahead, but the vessel refused to answer her helm, and he considered she touched bottom the moment before the order was given. The steamer then grounded heavily and remained fast, though the engines' were kept going.
