MILITARY SERIVE BOARD.
BOOT TRADE AFFECTED. Wellington, Feb. 3. The serious position of the boot trade in the Dominion, as regards Ufitli military and civilian work, was placed- before the Military Service Board to-day. The principal witness, a manufacturer in a large way, favored Government organisation of the trade, and the establishment of a Government factory. The proposal was practically endorsed by the Board. < It was stated that prior to the war there were MOO operatives in Xew Zealand,, and now there are only 1-200. One company was at bedrock, almost its entire work comprised military contracts, and the time for the completion of these contracts had expired, but all the factories were behind, consequent on the shortage of labor. Xo operatives were unemployed at present.
The appeals were adjourned until March 2, exemption being granted in the meantime. In the case of a shoe machinery expert who had enlisted, but had been exempted on two separate occasions by the Minister of Defence, the appeal was dismissed, the Board stating that the man could be got out of camp if it was found to be absolutely necessary.
