Owing to difficulty in obtaining loan money, expenditure on public works for the half year have been cut down to three millions. EFFECT OF RETRENCHMENT. Received Jan. 15, 12.40 p.m. Sydney, .fan. 14. The secretary ol the Railway Workers' Union states that there are already 4000 men thrown out of work and jOO more will shortly he added to the number, owing to the retrenchment on railway works. FEDERAL POLITICS. Heceived Jan. 15, 12.30 a.m. Melbourne, J:in. U. Political developments are unlikely until after the meeting of t.ie Hnghesites on Wednesday, and of the Liberals on Thursday.
