STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford. Jan. 2. The weathec proved the very best for the New Year holidays, there being bright sunshine each day. The races claimed most attention," and, from all accounts, president W. A. Young, secretary Alf. Coleman, and their many assistants had a most successful meeting. The entertainment given by Mrs. McBeth's amatem-s in the Town Hall on Monday evening proved a g'.-cat financial Faiccess. Tlie pantomime, Mieauty and the Beast," w ;nl with a swing that delighted the large audience present. The songs "Trentii-im" and "Tulip Time in Holland" were two items particularly deserving of mention. The choruses, marching, etc . were also loudly "applauded. The orchestra deserves ' a special word of prav ; c. whilst the limelight effects by Mr. ft. Jackson also merit mention. The entertainment was in aid of the Wounded Soldiers Fund. There was a good attendance at the railway station this morning to fareivel! the latest reinforcements leaving for the front. The Rev. Father Maples delivered a inrewell speech, wishing '.hem good lur. and a safe return. Mrs. H. Good, on behalf of the Ladies' Patriotic Committee, handed out soldiers' J comforts. i 'Die Rev. Oliver Dean, who has been vicar of St. Andrew's Church, Port Ahuriri, Naoicr, for many years, is at present visiting Taranaki,'making StratIcrd his headquarters. Considering the reputation of the W.l- - Garri--r.ii Band, tlu attendance of the public at the sacred concert given at the show grounds on Sunday was very disappointing. Those who were present were delighted with the programme submitted. The sum of £23 was collected A swarm c,f bees went begging for an owner to-day. The business portion of the town vas deserted, and, being undisturbed, the bees settle J under the verandah of an ironmonger A soap-box would come in liandj to a bee expert just now. Although t'n town has been thronged with visitors, the behaviour of all has been first-class. The police have had no trouble, and the "beery individual" usually assoevtted with sports meetings was an absentee in this instance. The marriage of Mr. W. IX. Russell, of the literary staff of the Ha'.vera Star, to Hilda, seeind daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Sole, of Stratford, was celebrated at Hcly Trinity Church, Stratford, on January 1. The ceremony was a quiet one, only immediate relatives of the. bride being present. It is only natural that one desires to obtain the best when making a pur- | chase. The buying i's still more satisfactory when you get the best at lowest cost. This was the experience of the thousand buyers at C. E. James' fancy goods warehouse during the holidays. There are bargains still awaiting purchasers. Step lively and set his stock.— Advt.
