STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Stratford County Council was held on Wednesday. Present; Crs. W, Hathaway (chairman), Christofi'el, Colman, Anderson, Smith, Were, Worthington, Walters, and Baskin.

On the call for nominations Cr. Christoflel proposed the retiring chairman, and this was seconded by Cr. Walters. Cr. Baskin proposed t'r. Smith, who was a younger man and would prove more energetic.

There was no seconder, and the retiring chairman was elected unopposed. All the councillor's congratulated Cr. Hathaway on his election. Cr. Ba-kin added a few words, and thanked the chairman for his courtesy to members and the able manner in which he had conducted the Council's business. Cr. Smith said that whilst l.'o had differed at times from the chairman, he trusted that they would all be I able to continue to do good work for I the Council during their term in office. Lester Bros., Midhirst, wrote re repairs to Queen s Circus. They agreed to pay £6 towards repairing the road, but thought the public hall and WesIcvan Church trustees might be approached for a sum to further improve the road.—Received.

Norman Liardet, Wellington, acknowledged the Council's condolence notice on the loss of his son in FranceReceived.

C. A. Hope, Stratford, applied lEor foreman's position on Huiroa Road.— Received.

District Engineer, Wanganui, wroto that the Council's request re Beaconsfield Road level crossing at Midhirst was receiving attention.—Received.

A. R. Reid, Toko, complained of being charged poundage fees for cows on road.—Received.

A. Koch, district engineer, stated that any application to have crossing at Foley's made into a public level crossing with eattlestops must be made by the local road authority; also the matter of trees on railway reserve obscuring the view will be looked into.

W. .f. Tristram, Eltham County Council, wished to know what date would suit the Council to meet his committee on the alteration of boundaries question.—South Riding members to :onfer with Eltham Council with power to act. Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote reporting that Mr. Edgar Hine, county representative, had resigned his seat on the Board, and it was necessary to appoint his successor. —Mr. W. Rogers to be nominated. A. J. dhainey, Toko, stated his school committee were going to tar-seal part of the school ground, and requested the engineer (Mr. Lopdell) to supervise the work.—Granted.

G. Sangster, Stratford, applied for a culvert and crossing at his property, Salisbury Road, also that same be metalled to inside the gate.—Granted; work to be done at his expense. G. Silk, Warwick Road, wished to purchase about a yard and a half of metal lying near his property.—Referred to Ridiiig member, with power to act. John Rca, Douglas, wrote, complaining of the disgraceful nature of the main drain through the station yards at Douglas. The Railway Department would clean same, provided the Council attended to the drain further down. 15. J. Watson, Douglas, wrote, stating he had cleaned drain on his property, but could not deepen it till the Water goes down a little.—Drain must be cleaned out within one month from date, or the Council will do the work at his expense. , D. Brosnan, Puniwhaku, tendered his resignation as a Board employee—Referred to chairman and Riding members, wit'i power to act.

TENDERS. Messrs. Wilson and Son and M. C. Aagaard, saddlers, Stratford, forwarded tenders for dog collars.—Wilson's tender at S%d. was accepted. The engineer was instructed to confer with the Engineer of Railways in the matter of protection of Manganui bridge at Midhirst by constructing a weir below the two bridges.

Cr. Baskin was appointed to inspect and report 011 the Midliirst Hall with reference to lighting, &c. Toil-gate keepers v.'era granted 7a. per week extra from October 23. 1910.
