TWO-UP SCHOOL.
RAIDED IN AUCKLAND. ■ 80 MEN ARBESTED An interesting side issue to the postponement of the racing at Auckland on Saturday was the raiding by detectives of an alleged "two-up school'' in Durham Street West, and the arrest of thirtysix men who wore there, on charges of being found in a common gaming-house. The place had been under suspicion for a "considerable time, and reasoning that a number of persons who had been disappointed of a day at the races would compensate themselves with the fascin ating pastime of "heading 'cm," Detectives Hammond, Cullen, Sweeney and Cummings deemed the time opportune for a raid on what they 1;. eved to be a two-up school. They invoked the assistance of Constable Trotter and Constable Neil], after having armed themselves with a search vfarrant, and nude their way quietly to the place. The raid proved to "be Will timed, for, after managing to dispose' strategically of the [loor-keepcr, the party made a surprise entrance to the room up above, .where they fojind 30 men engaged roiind a balze-covered mattress on which a nuantity of money was lying. The door was locked, and ndbody was permitted to leave the room. An S.O.S. mcsige was sent out to uniformed police, /ho rallied to the call, and the men in the room were split up into parties of six and dispatched under escort to the police station in taxi-cabs. 'When the first party of arrestees went away word passed along the public in Queen Street, jind almost at once a crowd of several hundred assembled, and encouragingly cheered each successive taxi load of arrested men on their way 'up above."
