PATRIOTIC WORK.

WEIGHT-GUESSING COMPETITION. A CHitfCb FOR EVERYONE, The campaign for funds for the Red Cross will be assisted by a. weightguessing competition to be conducted by Messrs. Sole Brothers, butchers, at the corner of Devon and Currie Streets tomorrow. Thirty prizes, consisting of pieces of lamb, wether mutton, "and dairy fed pork, valued at from 3s to 7s, will be offered as prizes. Competitors will be required to guess the weight of a beast, which will be on view at Messrs. Sole's premises from this afternoon. Every person contributing Is to the Red Cross fund will bo eligible to compete. The result of the competition will be made known in Monday morning's "News," and the delivery of prizes to the winners will be made next week as required. Mr. Bowman, of Pukearune, has donated two fat wethers, and Mr. W. B. Grant, of Westown, a fat lamb towards the prizes, Messrs. Sole Bros, finding the remainder.

Gifts are coming in rapidly for the .jumble stall at the Labor Day carnival. The proceeds from this stall are to be handed to the fund for blinded soldiers, and a special appeal is .made for articles of any description, which should be left at Miss Hamerton's, Devon Street, or at the women's patriotic depot, near railway station.

The Marble Bar Company har generously offered to supply all collectors on Saturday with morning tea, and during the afternoon the British Red Cross Committee will provide tea for col lectors and helpers at the Red Cross Depot in Queen Street.

Mesdanics Hugh Baily and Morrison acknowledge with tlianks, donations for their fund for Christmas parcels for the boys at the front as follows: Miss Agnes Wilson £l, Mrs. D. Hursthouse 'lOs. This fund has been enabled to send forward 174 parcels to the front .so far this season, the parcels being divided, 117 being sent to the Wellingaon Infantry Battalion, 38 to the Wellington Mounted Rifles, and 19 to the Maori contingent. The parcels contained amongst other things, 401hs. of cut up tobacco, 35,000 Old Judge and Three Castles Cigarettes, 3 gross of briar pipes, 16 dozen packs of playing cards, tobacco pouches', tooth paste, tooth and nail brushes as well as over 150 bath towels, several dozen jars of meat extract, condensed milk, coffee and milk, 10 Christmas puddings, 50 Christmas cakes, chocolates, biscuits and various other useful and appropriate articles. The fund has also remitted i'3s to Mrs. C. ll.,Weston in London, to be expended by her for the benefit of any New Zealand soldiew requiring assistance or comforts. All proceeds from the sale of flowers in the streets to-morrow will be devoted to the Eed Cross fund. The ladies of the Patriotic and Eed Cross Committees will be grateful for gifts of flowers for the purpose.
