RACING- FIXTURES, Oct. 7—Hawke's Bay J.O. Oct. 12— Mastcrton'R.C. Oct. 13, 14—Dunedin J.C. Oct. 21, 23—Wellington R.C. Oct. -23—Waverley-Waitotara R.Q, Xov. i, Q, S— Canterbury J.C, TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Races at Hastings to-day. Masterton heats on Thursday next. Ashley Reed has piloted ten winners this season. Welcome Nuggett, Depredation, and Korunga have been entered for the Auckland Oup. Bisogne, Tree Lucerne, and Hushman figure in the Railway Handicap at the same meeting. Evidently acting on New Zealand advice the Australian J.C. turned down Hector Gray's application for a "brief." "Billy" IPriee has been engaged to ride the Ormond .horses to-day, the quartette comprising Honey Bee,' Idyllic, Hyllus, and -Ilyginas.
, Austin will race at Waverley in the colors of Mr. Hugh Johnson, of Feilding, who purchased the Advance gelding the other day at'a remarkably lorn figure—--200 guineas.
Master Lupin has only just been taken up again, and can hardly bo seen at his best at Waverley. The Wanganui trainer has Moulu and Combustion going well and they will raee at Waverley. Jem is meeting Bon Reve to-day on 1.51b better terms than at Napier on Saturday, and some good judges pick the big son of San Fran to reverse positions at Hastings. Idyllic, who carries Ormond's cerise jacket, is likely to be well backed in the Maiden at Hastings, and Hopeite is another that, on Saturday's form, should not lack friends.
In whatever they slip Sea Lord today the much raeod San Fran gelding is sure to start favorite. He won anyhow at Napier on Saturday. In forty starts last season Sea Lord scored seven firsts, six seconds, and seven thirds—a creditable recordi
Hamlicapper Bert Coyle is reputed to be a good, careful weight-adjuster, and it will be interesting to note liow lie gets on with a crowd _of comparatively new horses at Waverley*. The big entries have not lightened his task either.
Lady Multifid appears to be very daintily treated with 8.0 in the Flaxmere Hack Handicap at Hastings. A wiu is overdue for her.
The Bastings Stakes looks like a toss up, or a case of "first out, first in," but if Estland and Astrophel get out at all smartly they may take a lot of catching. The Spring Handicap looks lik|o a race best left alone if no "deadly information" is forthcoming on the wires. Welcome Nuggett and Hyllus should be as seasoned as any of the likely runners.
Maraetotara has only gone up 91b for winning at Xapier Park, and may share favoritism with Teka in the Waipatu Hack Kace to-day.
The following horses have been nominated for the Waverley Cup (I%miles): Lady Aniai, Welcome Nugget, Moulu, Master Lupin, Vladian, Harbor' Light, Black Ada, Ratana, Depredation, Want, Sir Fisher, Crawford, Austin, Analogue. In the Brewer Handicap, C furlongs, Mr. Coyle will have the following to handicap: Lord Lupin, Drana, Starengo, Lady Amai, Avon Park, Interlude, Astor. Veto, Lady Middleton, Glenroy, Kateike, Play-off,, Patronale, Caycium.
Very large entries have been received for the minor events. Twelve figure in the Hurdles, fourteen in the Flying, twenty-six in the Maiden, twenty-eight in the Moumahaki Stakes, twenty-five in the Jackson Stakes, and a similar number in the Wilson Stakes. There are some speedy hacks engaged, including Hushman, Royal Chef, Munition, Bivouac, Golden Grafton, Zola, Flying Camp, Eront Eelaval, Camp Guard, Dood, Analogue, etc., and the gathering promises to be a great success. There is a whisper going around that Gaycium may be sent across to Sydney shortly. Captain Maekay, whose death was- recently reported, won about £2OOO in stakes during his racing career. Satisfactory' acceptances h|ave heen received for the Ilawkc's Bay spring meeting, which takes place at Hastings to-day, and amongst the number tiiat have been paid up for is the Hawera horse, Welcome Nugget, who is engaged in the Spring Handicap, run over a mile and a-quarter. Mr. J. Fryer is giving his 'horse plenty of racing, and, judging by his form at the Wanganui meeting, Welcome Nugget i-s well forward as regards his New Zealand Cup engagement. The running of Balboa. Multiply, Indigo, Blac.kall and others engaged at the Canterbury meeting next month will be watched with interest.
A smart lot of two-year-olds were produced at the Napier meeting, but an indifferent start reduced the Juvenile to a fiasco. Lingerie, by Finland—Fincry, was very fractious at the start, but eventually got a. fly, and that was the end of it. ' She is a fine free mover, and possibly might have won under any circumstances, though the others had no chairce from the word "Go." Estland, the full brother to •Bjorneborg, was looking very fit, as was also Noir (AH Black—Chimera). Astrophel, who is another smart galloper, claims full brothership to Astcrias. The Karanm pair were Mountjoy and Hymeona, of which the former was- the best on looks, though both went well when stretched out." If Estland, Vagabond and Astrophel go to the post for the Hastings Stakes much will depend on the start as to the way in which they will finish. Bon Reve scored very easily in the open hurdles at Napier. Usually he is sent to force, the pace, but on Saturday he was kept in behind 'until the home turn was reached, where he came away and scored nicely. Jem ran. a good race, too, and over a longer distance might heat Bon Reve next time they meet. Manakau showed the most promising form of tlio others, and will pickup a small hurdle race shortly. Old Woollomooloo ran badly last week, and seems to have just about lost .his punch. 1 One nasty accident marred the pleasure of the day. That was caused by Ilymcnacus throwing "Jimmy" Buchanan at the start of .a race. The wellknown horseman was severely "injured, breaking two ribs and suffering bruises to the liead and shoulders. He was unconscious for some time, hut is now reported to be progressing favorably. _ The stewards 'held an "inquest" into Nicomar's running in the Hurdles. The horse ran round the second hurdle, the reason being given that owing to the breaking of a stirrup-leather the boy on top lost control. A caution re rotten gear was handed out and the incident closed. Multiply was stated to be very .backward at HaatingSj ml one keeii judge
considered Monta.ua to be the fittest of the handicap horses produced there. Montana is not a good mud horse, but he ran a great race. Beltane failed to .-co the ten furlongs out, and reads like a false alarm. Hyllus was left at the [lost.
Sea. Lord had a very easy victory in the Railway Handicap, 'Out may find Hyginas a tough customer to crack at 'Hustings.
Those wlic saw Lady Multifid finishing in the last race at Wanganui have been saving up to have a .really. hi" '■punt" at Hastings. Pourparler, the chestnut full-sister to' Bobrikofl', is as unlike "old Bob" as it is possible to be. She will probably take time to prove her worth, however. Tlie 'chaser, Captain Maekay, passed in his cheques on Sunday last. | The splendid performances of Kilboy. Sasanof and Bee on the opening day of the Rundwick meeting show that New Zealand' horses are still able to hold their own with English and 'Stralian equincs, and it seems a thousand pities that 'Desert Gold is not sharing in their triumphs. What a sensation she would cause if pitted aaginst the weight-for-age cracks on the other side! Perhaps the projected trip may eventuate in the autumn.
