A SAD TRAGEDY Australian-NX Cable Association. Melbourne, September 10. A tragedy is reported from Vildura. In a fit of dementia, Mrs Baraclough shot dead two of her children. A third managed to deflect the rifle. Two others were rescued from a dam where the mother drowned herself. AMERICAN LABOR QUESTION. New York, September 10. Mr. H. Beauchamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, entertained by the ihardwarenien, commented on America's labor situation. Compulsory arbitration had been tried in New Zealand without very satisfactory result*, owing to the impossibility of executing the court's awards against employees. IMPORTED AFRICAN LABOR Johannesburg, September 10. Ten thousand natives have been recruited for dock labor in France. There is enthusiasm in native circles, though the Zulus and Basiitos regret that they ure not a lighting contingent. AMERICAN RAILWAY STRIKE. New York, September 10. The underground and elevated railway : strike is practically a failure. The employees are urging the calling out of 7 jO,OUO workers, in a sympathetic strike. PANAMA CANAL CLEARED Received Sept. U, 5.50 p.m. London, Sept. 10. Lloyds' reports that all waiting ships have cleared the Panama Canal channel, which now has an excellent 30ft draft. THREATENED RAILWAY STRIKE. Received Sept. 11, 8.15 p.m. London, Sept. 11. The South Wales raihvaymen have unanimously decided that unless 109 advance is conceded they will strike at midnight on the 17 th. They demand that the Government inu}|t give a definite guarantee to control the food supply and regulate the prices. .LIBEL ACTIONS SETTLED. Received Sept. 11. 10.25 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 11. Actions wherein Messrs. Holmati, C'ann, Hall and seven other Ministers claimed £2OOO each against the newspaper Mirror, for alleged libel contained in an article: '"'Does Bookmakers' Money Stand Between the People and the Totalisator?" was settled upon the paper stating it was never intended to accuse Ministers of corruption. Each plaintiff denied he had ever received any consideration from bookmakers in connection with the totalisator. ORGANISED INCENDIARISM AT SYDNEY Received Sept. 11, 10.25 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 11.
