UREEKS ATTACK BULGARIANS. I ORDERS FOR CESSATION j DISREGARDED. ANTI-GOVERNMENT FEEI.IXG- ' ACUTE. Eeeeived August 23, 9 p.m. Athens, August 23. The Greeks at a Salonika demonstration protested against the Bulgarian invasion and decided to defend Macedonia themselves if the Government policy was not changed. The Bourse is severely depressed. The public regard as heroes the garrison of Fort I'heapetra, the commander of which was killed whilst resisting the Bulgarians. Anti-Gounarist feeling is rising. Received August 23, 9 p.m. London, August '22. The War Office says the situation on the Doiran front is unchanged. We destroyed the railway bridges and the Angista station on the Struma front. On the 20th our mounted*, jointly with t'he French, successfully located the enemy on the Seres Sarajek front. The artillery stopped the advance ot the enemy skirmishers towards Kopriva bridge, and also dispersed working parties who were entrenching opposite Kamarjan and Kavdarxnah. Athens, August 23. Despite contrary orders the Greek troops in the region of Seres have been fighting t'he Bulgarians .since yesterday. The Greek commander called up all the reservists in that, region. London, August 23. The Morning Post's Athens' correspondent states that with the wholesale invasion of Greek Macedonia all thought of holding the Greek elections has been abandoned. This is doubtless one of the effects intended by the Germans, with the object of preventing the return of Yenizeios. The report is confirmed that the Greek garrison at Fort Theiptrea refused to surrender and fired on the Bulgarians; also, that the entire Sixth Greek Division at Seres bloodily resisted the Bulgarians. The Government sent urgent orders directing the cessation of fighting and ordering a retirement.
A SIGNIFICANT ADVANCE. GERMAN'S IN* ATHENS MONEYLESS. Received August 23, 10 p.m. London, August 23. Mr. Jeffries, the war correspondent, writing from Athens, says the Bulgarian advai.ee at Kozani is most significant, because the Germans are anxious to reopen communications with Greece by this route. The nosition of the Germans ii Alliens is difficult. They actually are moneyless. Recently the Gorman Minister oilieiaily informed the Greek' Government that 'German and Bulgarian troops would not oeeup. Seres oi Drama. BULCARS BAFFLED. NEW ALLIED TROOPS. Rome, August 22. A wireless message say 3 that the arrival of the Italians and Russians mused consternation among the Bulgars, and there were many desertions. The Bulgars continue to advance In Eastern Macedonia. Three Greek divisions embarked at Kavalla, where the Greek forts were handed over, with no time to remove guns or ammunition. ' ALLIES' STRATEGICAL UNITY. BEGINNING TO BE FELT. Received August 23. 10 p.m. London, -August 23. A leader in the Times says the Mace donia landing must create the deepest impression among the Balkan peoples and the Governments and rulers. The new campaign strikingly demonstrates the Allied strategical unity, wlik'h is fully achieved. It is now beginning to be felt on the whole vast theatre of war, resulting. in a double front, so dreaded by "ierman strategists. We have the initiative everywhere, including at, Salonika. Ultimate >'ictorv is assured.
A GATHERING OF THE CLANS. ITALIANS AND RUSSIANS IN GREECE. Salonika, August 22. The streets were thronged to welcome the Italian troops. Not only was tho military spectacle unique as a gathering pf almost all the Allies, but a score of races were represented. The Italians are commanded by General Derarcts. Shouts of "Vive Italia" greeted the men. General Sarrail presented the Legion of Honor to five Italian officers. The news of the fall of Gorizia arriving the same day added flavor to the martial scene. There was equal enthusiasm on an earlier occasion over the. landing of a Russian force. The Russian Consul and a troup of Greek priests blessed the landing and the martial bearing oi the Russians impressed the population. Now the Russians are upon every front from the Caucasus to Champagne, with the exception of one. Rome, Augut 22. Newspapers are optimistic about the Salonika enterprise. They declare that all the Powers of the Entente participating will be a reparation for Serbia's martyrdom. Never has the conception of such a unique front assumed more exact and concrete reality. ROUMANIAN ATTITUDE, SITUATION CRITICAL. OMINOUS MOVEMENT; Received August 23, 6 p.m London, August 22. The Frankfurter Zeitmig states that the Roumanian Minister of Foreign Affairs has directed couriers to traverse Russia and Sweden instead of Austria arid Germany. The situation at Bucharest is critical. Athens reports state that the Roumanian railways have been requisitioned and that soldiers have been recalled from leave. Wold's Agency circulates the report that Austria and Germany are preparing an ultimatum to Roumania,
