RACING FIXTURES. July I—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. July 12, 13, 15—Wellington R.C. Winter. Aug 15, 17. 19—C.J.C. Grand National. , TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa") Concluding <lay at Hastings Grand National entries should appear tli is morning. Weights for the Wellington Winter meeting are due on Monday. The maximum weight in the Grand National Steeplechase is 12.7. What price El Gallo? Tnenni has finished her racing career, Mid will visit Hallowmas this year. Patronale gets over the small sticks safely, but he looks for a dashed long time before he leaps! If breeding counts for anything the youngster by Hallowmas —White Crane should be some good. White Crane is by Royal Artillery—Stressa, and the last- named is of the Bend Or strain. Entries for the New Zealand' Cup are due on Friday next. "Moturoa" cannot pick many Taranaki entrants, and Welcome Nugget looks the best of a bad lot in this province. The owners of Yladian have lost a lot of good money over that prad recently, and someone ought to really tell them that the nag is only good on hard ground. In the mud. Vladian sprawls worse than Charlie Chaplin! Braeburn stands out as the best placed 'chaser of the season. Three wins iiave been credited to the Hawke's Bay jumper so far, and the Wellington Steeplechase will »e the next—perhaps! The weight-limit in the National puts Braeburn out of court, providing Handicapper Henry does not crowd the roughies in under 10st., and the.race is reckoned a foregone conclusion for a certain Aiicklandor, which could have carried his owner when he "walked in" in the Great Northern the other day. Dr. Platt'| stories contain many amusing anecdotese, and one that is worth recording is the telegram sent by an absconding Bar Von to his sorrowing clients. It read thus: "Go Nap on Clean Gone, by Railway Train out of Newmarket." That was only beaten by a layer whom we will call Bill Andrews. Fill had done to death the Thompson Handicap of H)M. and when the good thing scraped home he calmly pasted the following notice on his door: "Thompson Handicap.—Ladoga 1, Haskayne 2, r.lcriot 3. Also ran: Bill Andrews!" The big Australian, Woolloomooloo—or something like, that—is showing; great form over the big fences, and the writer wouuld not he surprised if the big fellow's number was hoisted any day now. Nothing like getting in early! They arc backing John Barleycorn for ihe New Zealand Cup in real earnest down l'."until. The handicapper will be pleased to hear this! j In reply to "Puzzled,": Golden March was first favorite, not tenth, as stated in the Press Association wire. Your dividend was correct. ' The crowd who are using the war as | a lever to work off their uailal "derry" '■■ on racing fell at the first fence tlhi other 1 day, when the Prime Minister stated in ihe House that, "The Government do not consider it necessary to deal by legis-i.-i.ion wltl> iVi« aiiogested curtailment of
racing." Tiro Government knows ofi which side its bread is,buttered, and the Patriotic Funds owe their rotundity mainly to the profits of racing. The kill-joys have not up to the present offered to compensate the Government or the Patriotic Funds for the money that will be lost by the curtailment of racing. It's their move. Manaia Park, n six-year-old chestnut by Maniapoto, out of a Sylvia Park mare, is being boomed in the Wairarapa as a decent hurdler. This "marvel" carries the colors of Mr. C. F. Vallaiiee, and his career will be watched with interest. Portland Lady, one of .T. 11. Prosser's jumpers, showed plenty of pace at Napier, and can be ticked off to win a short hurdle race during the next few weeks. Watch her. Con the Shaughran, who shook the mud of Taranaki off his heels a couple of seasons ago, is being worked again at Riccarton. Never much good, the attempt to turn him into a hurdler proved a rank failure. Hia new owner got a bad bargain. How's this for consistency? In Ave starts Braeburn has won four times, and has been second once. That's something to bray about, for sure! Lady Elysian is doing big things in the pony ranks in Sydney. There is good money to be picked up on the other side with a smart lilliputian.
