* I ORMSTOX'S DETENTION. I By Telegraph.—Press Association. , Wellington, June .'if). In regard to the Press Association message from Auckland stating that Francis Ormston, an Australian farmer, is stranded in Auckland owing to the police collecting his passport prior to 'his departure by the Niagara for Vancouver, the Hon. G. \V. Russell has stated that Ormston was a through passenger for Vancouver. He arrived in possession of a passport issued by the Commonwealth Government, which requested the New Zealand Government to secure the passport. He was therefore intercepted on the departure of the Niagara and the passport collected by the police. Not being in possession of a permit from the New Zealand Government to leave this country, he had to remain in New Zealand. The Commonwealth Government was communicated with and informed that its request had been complied with and the passport secured. In reply a cable had been received asking that the passport be sent hack to the authorities in Slelbourne, and this was being done. BIGAJIY CASE. Auckland, June 30. In the Police Court a retired farmer, named Alfred Clarence Mitchell, admitted a charge of bigamy, that being already married he. on Hay _ 4, went through a form of imirriage with Grace Appleby. Accused stated Jhat though not generally a drinking man he was at the time of the bigamou3 marriage differing from the effects of drink and
did not fully realise what lie was doing He admitted the copy of the certificate of his original marriage to Clara Lee, at Wellington, in ISA), was a true copy. Grace Appleliy gave evidence of 4ier marriage to accused at the Registry (Mice. Accused'* name was given as Burnett. She became engaged to him and later they went through the form of marriage before tiie Deputy Registrar. She was now eighteen years of age. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. SERIOUS CHARGES AGAINST SOLICITOR. Palmerston X., June 30. William Toswill, a Pahiatua solicitor who has been residing in Palmerston for a fortnight, was arrested yesterday on two charges of alleged theft of trust money, lie appearediii the Police Court this morninsr. Detective Quirke said the charges against accused were that, about July II). ]!)lf), he stole £IBO, the property of Selina Boxall, and, on July 10, 1013, lie stole .COO, the property of Boxall. Detective Quirke said n number of other serious charges would also he preferred against accused. The police applied for a remand to Pnhiatna for a week; Bail was.granted in £2OO.
