PUBLIC WORKS.

NO NEW WORKS THIS YEAR. BACKBLOCKS ROADS. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Wellington, June 1:1. The Minister for Public Works, in a statement to-night, said that no new votes would he placed on the Public Works Estimates this year. He had no new money to work on, and the only money voted would,,-be unspent balances. If this pressed hard on the backblocks, where the need for roads was urgent, county councils should revise lists after the Estimates were laid on the table of the House, and recommend to him the alteration and transfer of votes so as to meet the more urgent requirements. During the spring he would visit country centres, where local body members could meet him and arrange for an adjustment of expenditure.
