Mr. F. Basham, Eltham, County Council engineer, underwent an operation on Wednebday, and is progressing favorably. Mr. K. Masters, of Stratford, has de.cided to seek re-election on the Tarannki Education Board, as a representative of the Central Ward.

Among the wounded in Wednesday's casualty list appeared the names of Riflemen W. T. Christian and H. Gowers, both Kaponga lads, who went away with the first draft of Lord Liverpool's Own.

A London cable announces the death of Professor Silvanus Thompson, Principal and Professor of Physics in the City and Guilds' Technical College, Pinsbury, since 1885, aged 65 years. Mr. J. H. Upton, of Auckland, has been appointed acting-chairman of the hoard of directors of the Bank of New Zealand during the absence of Mr. Harold Beauchamp from the Dominion. The death is reported from IPalmerslon North of Quartermaster-Sergeant Sydney Arthur Clements, of J. Battery, N.Z.F.A. Deceased came from Devonshire, England, and had been in New Zealand for some ycar3. Deaths are' announce of several prominent residents in dift'erent parts of the Dominion.. Amongst them is Mr. Frederick Montague, of Wellington, one of thr best known wine and spirit merchants in New Zealand; Mr. C. S. McDonaV of Otalnihu, but for 22 years a resident of Epsom, whore he arrived from •Scotland in 1800; Air. Henry Wilding, aged 75, a well-known timber merchant of Auckland; and Mr. J. F, Baker, an old resident of Kaiapoi, where he commenced farming in 1855. Mr. Henry Rudmiui, one of the early settlers in Wellington, died on Friday, at the age of iS. The deceased was born in Nelson, and was brought to Wellington when he was only three years old. Nearly all his life was spent in and about Wellington.
