FIGHTING AT HOOGE. AUSTRALIANS IN THE TRENCHES. Received June S, 10.15 p.m. London, June 8. General Haig reports that the enemy succeeded on Tuesday in capturing the front line of trenches at llooge/ Attacks against other parts of our line failed. We repulsed a further small infantry attack west of Hooge on Wednesday.

During Tuesday night the Australians, entered the German trenches east of Bois Orenier, inflicting- loss and bringing back prisoners. Our troops also made a successful raid east of Givenehy.

FORT VAUX.

Tims the entire plateau south-east and south of Ypres, to the extent of about three kilometres, is in our possession. The British losses were very heavy. Fort Vaux is now in our hands. It was actually captured on June 2, but the news was delayed because the remainder of the garrison held out in subterranean rooms. They have now surrendered. Seven hundred were taken prisoner, and a great number of guns and machine-guns were captured. We repulsed all the enemy attempts at recapture.
