HOCKEY.
LADIES' TOURNAMENT, The second annual ladies' tournament was held in King Edward Park Recreation flround, Hawera, yesterday, under ideal weather conditions. There «as a fair attendance, and a collection was taken up in aid of the Wounded .Soldiers' Fund. Five teams entered, >iamely—Hinemoa (Hawera), Hawera District .School, Whakatika (Nevr Plymouth), New Plymouth High School and Kaponga. Kaponga, however, failed to put in an. appearance, and consequently the tournament was concluded earlier than was anticipated. All jhe matches were evenly contested, and the public were treated to some excellent play. The Hinemoa team (Hawera) were the winners of the tournament, and will therefore hold the challenge trophy for the current year. The winners played with considerable dash and well deserved their success. The Whakatika team (New Plymouth )were the runnersup,- and they alsc played first-class hockey, and were really unlucky in not securing the coveted trophy. The games were controlled by Messrs. W. Morrissey, S. Catran, and W. >T. Donaldson, who gave every satisfaction with the whistle. The officials desire to thank all those who in any way assisted in the tourna--1 ment, which 1 was thoroughly enjoyed. The following are the results:— Whakatika (0) y. N.P. High School (0) —No score. The game was very slow, and was altogether a poor display of hockey - Both teams played better towards the finish, but failed to register goals. . Hinemoa (0), v. Hawera D.H.S. (0) No score. The school played a very solid defensive game throughout, and although their territory was often invaded, Hinemoa failed to bring any invasion to finality. Hinemoa (3) v. N.P. High School (0) This game was fast, but the decision was never in doubt. The goals for the win- | ners were scored by Misses Stone, Rekl, and Piper. Whakatika (2) v. Hawera D.H.S. (0) This match was keenly contested throughout, and the result does not indicate the relative strength of the teams. Miss M. Mount (2) scored for the winners. New Plymouth High School (0) v. Hawera D.H.S. (0) —No score. This was an evenly contested game. Both teams tried hard to register a goal, but the game ended in a draw, without any score. Whakatika (0) v. Hinemoa (1) —This game was to. decide the championship for the day. Each team played with much dash and vim. At the call of time, no score had been registered, and it was decided to play another seven minutes' spell. Close on the call of timp, after a finely concerted rush, Miss Piper scored the deciding goal of the day. The following table shows the relative positions of the teams on ti.e day's play:
Points count two for a win and one point for a draw. Men's Match (Hawera v. Inglewood) —These teams met at Hawera yesterday morning, and after a fast and iutiresling game, Hawera proved the victors by three goals to one. For the winners W. Morrissey, Jacka, and R. Grieg notched one goal each. Mr. 11. Sutherland was an impartial referee.— Star.
