«a CLOSER LINKING-UP OF SCHOOL'S. By telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 22. In his address, the : President of the Education Institute .(Mr. fl. J. Cousins), said that to-day there was a closer linking up of the various grades of schools from kindergarten to the University, and particularly a closer union of primary and secondary schools. It was probably the most Urgent educational need of the day that secondary education should come more directly under State control. In facty it should be placed en the same national footing as primary education. He hoped to see a return to the primary school cadet system. , BUSINESS FOR PARLIAMENT. Wellington, April 22. The Prime Minister told a reporter to-day it at the four most important measures io be dealt with during the coming sesison were the Soldiers v Pensions, Compulsion, Land for Returned Soldiers, and Finance Bills.
HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE. Auckland, April 22. A six-roomed house a"t Epsom, owned and occupied by Mr. Harry J. Milk, was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morning. Insurances: House £450 in the Guardian, and the furniture £IOOO in the New Zealand Insurance Co. TUGBOAT IN A STORM. Auckland, April 22. The tugboat Cowan, purchased by the Auckland City Council / foi trawling, had a stormy voyage frojn Sydney. For six days she battled agniiist a gale. Water poured over the Vessel and for ] some days it was impossible to light the galley fire or use the forecastle. Captain House slept in a box on the bridge, covered with a sail, and the crew slept in tlie engine-room. Last Sunday the vessel was swept by a huge wave, but she righted herself, just in time to avert a disaster.
TEACHERS GRADING SCHEME. Wellington, April 22. At the annual meeting of the Educational Institute to-day, the Hon. Mr. Hanan announced that it was his intention to introduce, and if possible carry into operation this year, a new scheme for grading Jeachers. For many years, he said, he had felt that some national scheme was essential in order that merit in connection with the appointment and promotions in the teaching profession should be recognised. He was determined that the grading scheme should come out this year. i . POULTRY ASSOCIATION Wellington, April 22. At the annual conference of the Poultry Association the secretary submitted a report on the past year's operations. The industry, he Said, had been put to a severe test by the high price of feed, etc., but the worst was now over, and producers looked forward to a better time. • The heavy importations of eggs were due to a mistaken estimate of the production in New Zealand, It had been a very serious matter, as eggs in abundance had been produced in the Dominion. The industry is now making rapid progress. One firm, whose turnover for poultrymen's , products five years ago was ' £G000; brought the amount up to £17,000, and this year it would easily pass £20,000.
