GOLF.

! TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP i TOURNAMENT. FIRST DAY'S PLAY. The annual Taranaki golf championship and handicap tournament opened on the New Plymouth Club's links at Waiwakaiho on Saturday, and will be continued to-day and to-morrow morning. This gathering has always proved a popular Easter attraction to golfers from all parts of the North Island, and this year there are visitors from Wellington, Palmerston North, Wanganui, and other centres, while nearly all the Taranaki clubs are represented. Never has the course been in better order, the fairway and the greens being splendid, and glorious weathei assisted in making the conditions perfect for golf. The number of competitors is not. quite as large as that of last year, and for tlii.s war—which has thinned the ranks of golfers as in other sports —is responsible, but the standard of play on Saturday was high, and'the remaining rounds of the championship promise to produce some good play. The principal event on Saturday was the qualifying round of the championship over 36 holes, and from a large field the best eight players qualified. It is usual for sixteen to qualify, but in order to enable the'championship to be completed to-morrow morning only eight qualify this year. The best card for two rounds was brought in by _L. Scifert (Palmerston North) who did 168. This is two strokes better than the scores of J. F. Ritchie and G. Sim, who made the best scores last year with 170. The two rounds on Saturday also embraced a modal handicap, which was won by K. B. Bain (New Plymouth) with >IBS-24-IC4, and a* teams' match, which was won by Palmerston North. During the day the nine-hole putting course was well patronised, and the three best cards handed in for the meeting will entitle the player to a silver button. The management of the tournament is all that could -be desired. The secretarial duties were well carried out by Mr W. H. Wood, who was ably assisted by Messrs J. Paton, C. Denny Brown, and other members of the committee. Details of the play were as follows:
