TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. THE OPENING DAY. The annual Taranaki championship and handicap tournament will be held on the New Plymouth Club's links at Wsuwakaiho to-day, Monday and Tuesday. The qualifying round of the Taranaki championship will be played this morning, starting at 9 a.m. The round will be over 36 holes, while a teams match and a medal handicap will be combined with this event. It is usual for 16 players to qualify, but in order that the final may be played on Tuesday morning, only eight ' will qualify this year. The' four-ball match will .also be played on Tuesday morning, instead of during the afternoon, and the bogey match to have been played on Ttfesday morning will be deleted from the programme, thus leaving the afternoon free. The links have never been in better playing order than they arc at present, and some good golf is anticipated. J. F. Ritchie, last year's champion, will not be present this year, but S. Turner, R. J. Taylor (both of Wellington), G. Sim, W. Seifcrt (both of Palmerston North)), and other visiting players will provide splendid competition with Taranak's best players.for a keen dispute for championship honors. Altogether there are over sixty entries for all events, and given a continuance of the fine weather, a successful gathering, is assured. TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. QUALIFYING ROUNDS, 36 HOLES.
