(By "Moturoa.") ) Ellcrslie to-day. Hawera trots on Monday. Feeding and Canterbury meetings open on Monday. Everybody will need running shoes to get on Royal Arms to-day. Hula Grey is trotting in great style, and will be well backed at Hawera on Monday. „ The Easter Handicap looks very "hard," but if a lightweight can extend King Lupin it may be Housewife. Desert Gold has nothing to beat in either of her engagements at Ellerslie, and it will surprise most punters if the totalisator handles a century on either race. Cultriform is one of the most promising of the Auckland lightweights, but Hyttus, looks like keeping the local crowd in a state of perspiration. On Trentham form, Multiply is to be strongly supported in the President's Handicap, one mile and a quarter, a distance that should suit him very nicely. "No Killjoy" pretends to be offended at this scribe's reference to Anzac Day, and the postponement of racing. If he reads the par again he will probably conclude that he has rushed into print before he properly digested it. I again state that Anzac Day was not originally intended to be held as a day of mourning, but In deference to wishes of a certain party the clubs generously deferred meetings, dates of which were sanctioned in August last. Concerning Anzac Day, this week's Press comments as follows: "We do not forget that the Government declared a public holiday when the news of the landing on' Gallipoli wa3 received in Ne« Zealand, and we should regret if morbid gloom were allowed to mark the anniversary of a day of triumphant valour." Concerning the club's action the Prime Minister telegraphed: "On behalf of the Government I desire to thanlc you. . . .1 highly appreciate the club's courtesy and consideration in postponing the meeting." To which "Moturoa" has nothing to add. Another correspondent wants to know the names of the breeder (or breeders), of the 'chasers Guy Fawkes and Silvio. Unfortunately, neither of these horses are. included in the New Zealand Stud Book, and no official record can supply the. answer, though some of the old identities might oblige—that is, if their memories can go back to the 70's—a big order! Concerning Guy Fawkes, there is a horse of that named in the Stud Book, but the brown horse of Mr. Harry Redwood, was by Ravenswortli Fidget, by Sir Hercules—Flirt, by Leading Article—Madcap, a New South mare. This Guy Fawkes was bred by a Mr. Emerson, anil won the. Canterbury Cup, Canterbury J.C. Handicap, and the Dunedin Cup in 1577. Guy Fawkes, by Bedouin —Mokamoka, was a chestnut gelding, and carried Mr. R. Hoskin's colours. Ran second to Mr. A. Bayly's Caoutchouc in the Steeplechase at Omata and won the Bell Block Cup, both in 18S4. On New Year's-Day following, Guy Fawkes won the Hurdies at Waitara. It was in 1880—not 1885 as stated—that Guy Fawkes was sent out a hot favorite in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and when leading fell at the stone wall. The following year, 1887, Silvio, a chestnut gelding by Izaak Walton—Mokamoka, won the Northern with Russell in the saddle, and carried list 21b. Judging by the dividend, Mr. D. Maloney's gelding was favorite. Guy Fawkes was not a runner in. this race, nor in the race of 1885, when Macaroni led Whalebone and Fairplay home. Further than that the records do not go, but probably Mr. Jc-e Chadwiek, or the sec retary of the Auckland Racing Club might throw some light on the subject.
